It is quite difficult to get to Fogo Island, Cape Verde. You can either fly to Sal or Boa Vista and get a flight to Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. From here you can travel to Fogo either by ferry or by a short flight. But the contrasts of the island and particularly the moonscape around Pico do Fogo will be worth all your efforts! Did you know that Fogo is one of the highest islands in the world?
After driving for almost an hour along lush green farmlands, we made it up to the crater of the highly active Fogo volcano. The contrast couldn't be more striking: the phosphorescent greenery was replaced by a rocky, deep black lava soil. Spotting Fogo volcano for the first time will make you realize that we are all very, very tiny in front of Mother Nature's magnitude.
